What is Holotropic Breathwork®?

Moving toward wholeness. “Holotropic” comes from the Greek holos (whole) and trepein (to turn towards). The name reflects a central belief of the practice: each of us has an inner healing wisdom that can guide the way.

Developed in the 1970s by psychiatrist Stanislav Grof and Christina Grof, Holotropic Breathwork® invites you to lie down, close your eyes and breathe a little more deeply and faster than usual, accompanied by evocative music. This combination opens an expanded state of awareness and consciousness without the use of substances.

The method draws together insights from psychedelic and consciousness research, anthropology, depth and transpersonal psychology, and the wisdom of Eastern spiritual practices and mystical traditions from around the world.

Each experience is unique: memories, emotions, physical release, insight or a sense of spiritual connection may arise. No two sessions are alike, and no one directs your experience. You remain in charge of your own process.

How it differs from other breathwork

  • Three-hour sessions, not short exercises, giving the process time to unfold and settle.

  • Never alone: every breather has a dedicated sitter, with trained facilitators in the room.

  • In person only. Genuine Holotropic Breathwork® is never offered online.

  • Non-directive: no scripts or goals. Your inner wisdom leads.

  • Careful screening, preparation and integration are part of the method, not optional extras.

  • No substances. Breath, music and a safe setting are all that is used.

What you will experience

  • Breath: deeper, faster breathing at your own pace

  • Music: a three-hour arc that carries the journey

  • Bodywork: optional, focused support, only with your consent

  • Mandala: drawing your experience, no art skills needed

  • Sharing: a circle to share what has heart and meaning and connect with others

Every Holotropic Breathwork® experience follows an arc that includes preparation, the sessions and integration. Before you join the workshop, you will have a one-to-one call with a facilitator to ask any questions, go through a medical screener and make sure this is the right time for you to have this experience.

The four days at a glance

  • Thursday 4 February, 5.00 – 8.00 pm. Preparation: welcome and opening circle, introduction to the method, questions and pairing.

  • Friday 5 February, 9.00 am – 9.00 pm. First sessions: morning breathwork / sitting session, mandala drawing, lunch, afternoon breathwork / sitting session, mandala drawing, dinner, sharing circle.

  • Saturday 6 February, 9.00 am – 9.00 pm. Second sessions: morning breathwork / sitting session, mandala drawing, lunch, afternoon breathwork / sitting session, mandala drawing, dinner, sharing circle.

  • Sunday 7 February, 9.00 am – 1.00 pm. Integration: reflection and integration practices, closing circle, guidance for the days ahead.

You might feel drawn to this if

  • You are curious about yourself. You want to explore your inner world more deeply and see yourself in new ways.

  • You are in a time of transition. A life change, ending or new beginning is asking for space, reflection and clarity.

  • Talking only goes so far. You sense that what you carry lives in the body, beyond what words alone can reach.

  • You long for meaning. You are seeking a deeper sense of connection, purpose or spirituality, on your own terms.

  • You want a substance-free path. You are interested in expanded states of consciousness without the use of any substances.

  • You value safety. You would like to do deep work within a small, caring group, fully supported throughout.

Who is in the room

  • The breather lies on a mat with eyes closed, breathing with the music and allowing whatever arises.

  • The sitter, another fellow participant, stays present by your side, offering you water, tissues or a blanket when needed, without guiding or interrupting.

  • The facilitators: trained facilitators hold the space for the whole group and offer individual support or bodywork when needed.

Your safety comes first

This is powerful work and is not suitable for everyone. Everyone completes a confidential application and screening before a place is confirmed. Please speak with us first if any of these apply to you:

  • Heart or cardiovascular conditions

  • High blood pressure

  • Glaucoma

  • Epilepsy or seizure disorders

  • Recent injury or surgery

  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

  • History of psychosis

  • Any condition needing regular medication

Holotropic Breathwork® complements, but does not replace, psychotherapy or medical care.

After the workshop

One-to-one integration call: you will have the opportunity to have a one-to-one call with a facilitator if needed.

Integration gathering: two weeks later, we meet again in person to share with the community how you are doing, and to practise the Non-linear Movement Method® to further support integration of your Holotropic Breathwork® experience.

What your investment includes

The Thursday preparation evening, both full days of breathwork with lunch and dinner on Friday and Saturday, the Sunday integration morning, your one-to-one preparation call and the follow-up integration gathering.
